No More Culls? Male Layer Chicks Might Soon Be Spared Death Sentence

Male layer chicks form a huge welfare conundrum for the egg industry around the world, writes The Poultry Site’s Editor Alice Mitchell.
The male chicks produced by layer breeds are not as suitable for meat production as today’s specialist broiler breeds, meaning it is not efficient for poultry producers to raise the birds. Instead, they are macerated or gassed soon after hatching.
The total number of male chicks killed could be as high as 3.2 billion male chicks across the world every year, according to In Ovo, a Dutch company aiming to solve the problem.

The U.S. Poultry & Egg Association (USPOULTRY), National Chicken Council, National Turkey Federation and United Egg Producers have made available an updated economic impact study that highlights the positive impact the poultry industry has on jobs, wages and federal and state revenue in the United States. A dynamic and integral part of the national economy, the U.S. poultry industry provides 1,682,269 jobs, $96 billion in wages, $441.15 billion in economic activity and $34 billion in government revenue.

Prepacked, branded meat make headway in Asia

Consumers are becoming more accepting of chilled and frozen meat, but at different paces in various countries. While some consumers have embraced prepacked, precut and preweighed meat, others continue to cherry-pick. In mature Asian markets, prepacked chilled and frozen meat have been making progress. In Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, and China, it is typical to see chilled and frozen meat sold prepacked in supermarkets and meat shops. While this is mostly true in urban centres, better cold chain logistics have made these value-added products available even in areas outside of cities.

Veterinary Feed Directive goes into effect January 1

The Veterinary Feed Directive (VFD) goes into effect on January 1, 2017. After this date, all medically important antibiotics intended for use in animal feed will become VFD drugs and must be used under the supervision of licensed veterinarians. Feed manufacturers will be required to receive a VFD order – a signed and written authorization from a licensed veterinarian to purchase and use VFD antibiotics on and in animal feed.
